Introduction

   Unwanted heat is a problem for all industrial systems. Even a well-designed system operating at top efficiency converts about 20% of its input power to heat. The heat input can be dissipated through natural cooling; if this is insufficient, a heat exchanger is added to the system.

   The purpose of this course is to explain how heat exchangers work and identify the general types of boiler which are available and to take a look at not only how to go about selecting a particular heat exchanger from a group but also how to install, operate, and maintain the selected heat exchangers. Obtaining a better understanding of heat exchangers will help to obtain the best possible plant performance.
